Symptoms of Hearing Loss in Children

Children can develop hearing difficulties at any time in their childhood and as a parent you may be one of the first to suspect a problem. If a hearing problems is not identified early it can have a devastating effect on your child’s language acquisition, communication development, confidence and social skills. One of the most common causes of hearing problems in childhood is “Glue Ear”.

These are some of the symptoms of hearing loss in children:

  • Say’s “what?”, “pardon?” or “uh?” frequently
  • Does not always respond when called
  • Appears inattentive or prone to daydreaming
  • Has the TV set at a high volume
  • Talks too loudly
  • Has unclear speech or mispronounces words
  • Becomes unsettled at school
  • Is often tired, grumpy, frustrated or over-active

If you are concerned about your child's hearing, speak to your family doctor immediately and ask for your child to be referred for an audiological assessment.
